Overview

A gentle-paced trip combining a standard physical with a TCM constitution assessment.

Hangzhou is one of China's most relaxing cities: a lake ringed by hills, tea plantations and temples. This route matches that pace — a standard Western physical and women's health screening, combined with a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) constitution assessment and a personalised wellness plan.

The TCM element is about lifestyle: diet, sleep, exercise and tea, tailored to your constitution. It complements the Western physical rather than replacing it.

This route is ideal for

  • Women who want breast, cervical, thyroid and bone-density screening
  • Travellers aged 40+ interested in TCM-based lifestyle and diet advice
  • Women around menopause looking for both Western and TCM perspectives
  • Anyone who prefers a slower, scenic trip

Health program · TCM constitution assessment + standard physical

What the checkup covers

Standard physical

The Western baseline that the TCM assessment builds on.

  • Complete blood count
  • Liver and kidney function
  • Fasting glucose and HbA1c
  • Lipid panel
  • Thyroid function
  • Tumour markers (e.g. CEA, AFP; PSA for men, CA-125 for women)
  • ECG
  • Abdominal and thyroid ultrasound
  • Low-dose chest CT
  • Body composition

Women's health screening

The screens most recommended for women over 40.

  • Breast ultrasound and/or mammography
  • HPV test and cervical cytology (TCT)
  • Gynaecological ultrasound
  • Bone density scan (DXA)
  • Female physician on request

TCM constitution assessment 体质辨识

A TCM physician classifies your constitution using the nine-type framework widely used in Chinese medicine.

  • Standardised constitution questionnaire
  • Pulse diagnosis
  • Tongue diagnosis
  • Discussion of sleep, digestion, energy and stress

TCM wellness plan

Practical, personalised advice to take home. This is lifestyle guidance, not a diagnosis.

  • Diet and seasonal food guidance
  • Tea recommendations
  • Exercise (e.g. tai chi, baduanjin)
  • Optional herbal consultation, checked against your medications

Default tier: Basic Executive Physical. See what each tier includes and costs in our health checkup guide. Final tests are confirmed by the hospital physician after reviewing your history.

Checkup day

A typical morning

07:30Meet your coordinator at the hotel or hospital; registration and ID check (bring your passport).
08:00Fasting tests first: blood draw, urine sample, abdominal ultrasound.
09:00Imaging (CT/MRI) and cardiac tests; breakfast once fasting tests are done.
10:30Specialist exams — eye, ENT, dental, gynaecology or urology as relevant.
12:00Most physicals finish by lunchtime. Sedated endoscopy needs an extra hour or two of recovery.

Preparation

Before the checkup

  • Fast for 8–12 hours before the checkup (small sips of water are usually allowed — your coordinator will confirm).
  • Avoid alcohol and heavy, fatty meals for 2–3 days beforehand.
  • Bring your passport, a list of current medications and any previous reports or imaging.
  • Take essential medication (e.g. blood pressure) as advised; diabetes medication is usually adjusted for fasting — ask first.

Practical tips

Before you go

  • The first spring tea is picked before the Qingming festival in early April — plan around it if tea is the highlight.
  • Try to avoid scheduling the checkup during your period; urine and gynaecological tests are best done at another time.
  • Hangzhou is about one hour from Shanghai by high-speed train, so it pairs easily with the Shanghai route.

FAQ

Hangzhou checkup tour — answered.

What is a TCM constitution assessment?
A TCM physician classifies your constitution (for example qi-deficient or damp-heat) using a questionnaire plus pulse and tongue examination, then gives diet and lifestyle advice. It complements, but does not replace, the Western physical.
Is the women's screening done by female doctors?
We can request a female physician for gynaecological and breast examinations; tell us when you book.
Will I be prescribed herbs?
Only if you want them. Any herbal prescription is checked against your current medications, and we can provide granules that are easier to travel with.
Will my results be ready before I fly home?
Most lab, ECG, ultrasound and imaging results are ready within the trip, which is why every itinerary schedules the checkup early and the results consultation near the end. Biopsy pathology or genetic tests can take longer; those reports are emailed and reviewed by video call.
How much does a checkup tour cost?
The checkup is priced by tier (see the tier pricing on our health checkup guide); travel, hotels and guides depend on dates and comfort level. Send us your dates and we'll reply with an itemised quote.
Can I change the itinerary or the checkup tier?
Yes. Every route is a template. You can upgrade or downgrade the checkup tier, add days, or combine two routes — for example Beijing + Xi'an, or Shanghai + Hangzhou.
What visa do I need?
That depends on your nationality and how long you stay. Many travellers now qualify for visa-free entry or transit; check our visa guide or ask your coordinator before booking flights.
Is there an English-speaking coordinator?
Yes. A coordinator handles hospital registration, accompanies you on checkup day, translates during consultations and arranges transfers.
What if the checkup finds something?
The physician explains the finding and what it means. If further tests or treatment are needed, we can arrange them in China during your trip, or prepare an English summary for your doctor at home.
