FAQ
Frequently asked questions.
- Do I need an M-visa as a UK citizen?
- Yes — for inpatient or surgical care in mainland China, UK citizens require an M (medical) visa. Apply via the Chinese Visa Application Service Centre in London, Manchester or Edinburgh; standard processing 4–6 business days. Hong Kong is visa-free for UK passport holders up to 6 months. We provide the hospital invitation letter and support the application. Companion / spouse visa is M-visa with relationship documentation.
- Will the NHS reimburse?
- No — NHS England, NHS Wales, NHS Scotland and HSC Northern Ireland do not reimburse elective treatment abroad except in specific cross-border directive cases that broadly do not apply to non-EEA destinations. The NHS S2 / E112 routes apply to EEA / Switzerland only. Self-pay or private medical insurance is the assumed payment route.
- Will my private medical insurance cover treatment in China?
- Carrier-dependent. International policies that typically reimburse: Bupa Global; Cigna Global; AXA International; Allianz Care. UK domestic policies (Bupa UK, AXA Health, Vitality, WPA) generally do not cover elective treatment abroad except as out-of-network. Confirm in writing before travel; we provide bilingual receipts and ICD-10 / OPCS-mapped procedure codes.
- What about flight options from the UK?
- Direct flights: LHR ↔ PEK (Air China, British Airways); LHR ↔ PVG (Virgin Atlantic, China Eastern, Air China); LHR ↔ CAN (China Southern); LHR ↔ HKG (Cathay Pacific, BA, Virgin); MAN ↔ PEK (Hainan); MAN ↔ HKG (Cathay); EDI ↔ PEK (occasional). Typical 10–11 hours direct. Compression stockings, hydration and 90-minute walks are standard. For post-op return travel, surgeon clearance required.
- What about prescriptions and bringing UK medication?
- Personal-use prescription medication is allowed in reasonable quantity (typically up to 90 days' supply) with the original UK prescription. Strictly controlled substances (CD2/CD3 — opioids, benzodiazepines, ADHD stimulants) require a bilingual physician letter and may need declaration on arrival. Cannabis-derived products including CBD are illegal in mainland China — do not bring even legally-prescribed cannabis-based medicinal products. Always carry medication in original labelled bottles, never in pill organisers.
- What about the M-visa application specifically?
- Documents required: completed visa form (online via cova.mfa.gov.cn); passport valid 6+ months with 2 blank pages; biometric photo; hospital invitation letter (provided by us); proof of accommodation; travel itinerary including return ticket; financial proof. Companion: same documents plus relationship certificate (marriage certificate or birth certificate). Standard processing 4–6 business days; express 2–3 days for urgent cases at +50% fee. Fee: ~£115 standard.
