FAQ
Frequently asked questions.
- Is China a credible destination for hernia repair?
- Class A general surgery departments perform tens of thousands of hernia repairs annually using the same mesh products (Bard, Ethicon, Medtronic) and techniques (Lichtenstein, TEP, TAPP, eTEP, retro-rectus, component separation) used at Western academic centres. Robotic platforms (da Vinci) are available for complex ventral and hiatus hernia. Recurrence rates at top centres are within published international benchmarks.
- What does it cost?
- Indicative all-in international-patient pricing: open Lichtenstein inguinal $2,800–$4,500; laparoscopic inguinal (TEP/TAPP) $3,800–$6,500 (bilateral repair often same fee or modest premium); umbilical $3,200–$5,500; large incisional repair with component separation $8,500–$18,000; laparoscopic Nissen for GERD with hiatus hernia $7,500–$12,500. Quotes include surgeon, anaesthesia, hospital stay, standard mesh and 30-day follow-up.
- What about mesh — is it safe and what brand will I get?
- Polypropylene mesh is the standard for ventral and inguinal repair globally. Top centres use Bard (Marlex, Ventralight, Ventrio), Ethicon (Prolene, Ultrapro, Physiomesh — discontinued globally), Medtronic (Symbotex, Parietex). Biologic mesh (Strattice, Permacol) is used for contaminated fields and complex reconstruction. Confirm specific mesh brand in your written quote — the discharge package includes the mesh certificate with batch and serial number.
- How long do I need to stay?
- Indicative stays: open or laparoscopic inguinal 1–3 days inpatient + 5–7 day total stay; umbilical 1–2 days + 5–7 day total; large ventral with component separation 5–7 days + 14-day stay; hiatus / fundoplication 3–5 days + 10-day stay. Long-haul flights generally cleared at 7 days for routine hernia, 10–14 days for complex.
- What about recurrence and complications?
- Recurrence at 5 years for primary inguinal mesh repair: 1–4% globally; for primary ventral mesh repair: 5–15%; for complex re-recurrent ventral: 10–30%. Complications: chronic groin pain after inguinal 5–15% (usually mild), seroma 5–20%, mesh infection < 1% with prophylactic antibiotic. Smoking, BMI > 35, diabetes and recurrent hernia all increase risk. We recommend 4-week smoking cessation and weight optimization where applicable.
