FAQ

IVF in China — answered.

Who is eligible for IVF in China as an international patient?
Under the National Health Commission's Assisted Reproductive Technology regulations, IVF in mainland China is restricted to legally married heterosexual couples. Couples must present: (1) a valid marriage certificate (foreign marriage certificates require notarization and Chinese apostille / consular legalization); (2) both partners' passports; (3) a documented medical indication for IVF. Single women, same-sex couples, and surrogacy are not permitted under current mainland Chinese law. International couples seeking treatment outside these criteria typically choose Hong Kong, Thailand or the United States. We are transparent about this regulatory framework and will tell you upfront if you are not eligible.
What does IVF cost in China?
Indicative all-in international-patient pricing per fresh IVF cycle at top reproductive medicine centres: standard IVF $5,500–$7,500; IVF with ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) $6,500–$8,500; IVF + PGT-A (preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy) $9,000–$13,500 including biopsy and lab fees; frozen embryo transfer (FET) $1,800–$2,800 per attempt. Quotes include consultations, ovarian stimulation medication, egg retrieval, lab fees, embryo culture, and one fresh transfer. Excludes optional add-ons such as time-lapse imaging or assisted hatching.
Which Chinese hospitals are licensed for assisted reproduction?
Approximately 540 institutions in mainland China are licensed by the National Health Commission to perform assisted reproductive technology. International-patient-friendly programs include: (1) Peking University Third Hospital — birthplace of mainland China's first IVF baby (1988), national reproductive medicine reference; (2) Reproductive & Genetic Hospital of CITIC-Xiangya (Changsha) — among the largest IVF centres globally by cycle volume; (3) Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital — strong PGT and complex case program; (4) Renji Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University — Class A teaching hospital; (5) Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital (Guangzhou) — strong reproductive endocrinology and male fertility program. All accept international patients via international medical departments with English-speaking coordinators.
What success rates are reported?
Per published Chinese data, leading reproductive medicine centres report clinical pregnancy rates per fresh transfer of approximately 50–55% in women under 35, declining to 35–40% age 35–37, 25–30% age 38–40 and 10–15% age 41–42 — broadly consistent with SART (US) and HFEA (UK) benchmarks. Live birth rates are 5–10 percentage points lower. Success rates depend strongly on individual factors and should be discussed with the treating physician based on your AMH, antral follicle count and partner sperm parameters. We do not guarantee outcomes.
How long do I need to stay in China for an IVF cycle?
A typical fresh cycle requires two visits or one extended visit: (1) initial workup and consultation 3–5 days; (2) ovarian stimulation 8–12 days during which monitoring scans occur every 2–3 days; (3) trigger and egg retrieval day 1; (4) fresh embryo transfer 3–5 days post-retrieval, OR freeze-all and return for a frozen embryo transfer in a later cycle. Total in-country time: 18–25 days for a one-trip fresh cycle; or two trips of 7–10 days each for a freeze-all + later FET cycle. PGT-A adds 2–3 weeks of lab time before transfer.
What about PGT-A and PGT-M (genetic testing)?
PGT-A (aneuploidy screening) and PGT-M (monogenic disease screening, e.g. cystic fibrosis, thalassemia) are available at licensed centres. PGT for non-medical sex selection is prohibited by Chinese law. PGT-M for sex-linked genetic disease (e.g. hemophilia, Duchenne muscular dystrophy) is permitted when there is a documented medical indication. Pre-implantation testing is performed in licensed cytogenetics labs at the same centre or a partner reference lab.
What documentation do I need to bring?
(1) Marriage certificate, notarized and apostilled / consular-legalized for use in China; (2) both partners' passports valid 6+ months; (3) M-visa (medical visa) — we provide the invitation letter; (4) recent fertility workup if available: AMH, FSH, LH, estradiol, AFC ultrasound, semen analysis, HSG or saline sonogram, infectious disease panel (HIV, hepatitis B and C, syphilis); (5) any prior IVF cycle records. The treating centre will repeat infectious disease testing on arrival per Chinese regulations.
What about egg / sperm donation and surrogacy?
Donor eggs are available at licensed centres but the donor pool is small and tightly regulated; expect a 6–18 month wait. Donor sperm is available from licensed sperm banks. Surrogacy is illegal under mainland Chinese law and we do not arrange or refer for surrogacy. Couples requiring donor or gestational arrangements typically pursue treatment in jurisdictions where these are legal and regulated.
