FAQ
Genetic screening, in plain language.
- What genetic tests are available in China?
- Three main categories: (1) Hereditary cancer panels — BRCA1/2 (breast/ovarian), Lynch syndrome (colorectal/endometrial), TP53 (Li-Fraumeni), expanded multi-gene panels covering 50–100+ genes; (2) Whole-exome and whole-genome sequencing — comprehensive baseline screening, longevity-focused; (3) Pharmacogenomic panels — drug metabolism gene profiling guiding warfarin, clopidogrel, statin, and chemotherapy dosing. All available at top Class A international medical departments.
- How much does genetic testing cost in China?
- Indicative pricing: BRCA1/2 alone $300–$600; expanded hereditary cancer panel (50–100 genes) $400–$1,200; whole-exome sequencing $800–$1,800; whole-genome sequencing $1,500–$3,000; pharmacogenomic panel $200–$500; longevity panel (combined cancer + cardiovascular + cognitive risk) $1,500–$3,500. The same tests run 2–3× higher at US clinical genetic services.
- Who should get genetic testing?
- Strong indications: family history of breast, ovarian, colorectal, pancreatic or endometrial cancer; personal history of cancer at young age; ancestry with founder mutations (Ashkenazi Jewish, Chinese, etc.); planning targeted prevention strategies. Whole-genome screening in healthy patients yields actionable findings in ~2–4% of cases — useful for some, but should be ordered with informed consent and genetic counselling.
- Is genetic counselling included?
- Yes — at top centres. Pre-test counselling explains the panel scope, possible results (positive, negative, variant of uncertain significance), implications for relatives, and insurance/discrimination considerations. Post-test counselling explains specific findings and recommended actions. PUMC International, Ruijin VIP and Zhongshan Hospital offer English-speaking certified counsellors.
- What if I have a positive result?
- Same-trip workup is straightforward in China. A positive BRCA1 might trigger same-week breast MRI screening, breast surgery consultation for risk-reducing mastectomy options, gynae-onc consult for risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy planning, and family cascade testing. Bilingual report and full referral pathway provided. Panda Touring Care extends visa and accommodation as needed.
- Will the result be valid in my home country?
- Yes — all tests are run on validated NGS platforms (Illumina NovaSeq, BGI MGISEQ) with clinical-grade laboratory standards. Reports are issued in English with full variant nomenclature (HGVS), ClinVar / ACMG classification, and references — directly usable by your home physician or genetic counsellor. We can also arrange direct data transfer to your home institution's clinical genetics service.
