FAQ
Frequently asked questions.
- Is China credible for pediatric care?
- Yes — China's flagship children's hospitals (Beijing Children's, Shanghai Children's Medical Center, Children's Hospital of Fudan University) are Class A teaching specialty hospitals, members of national rare-disease and pediatric oncology networks, and partner extensively with Boston Children's, Cincinnati Children's and other Western academic pediatric centres on training and joint research. Beijing Children's alone sees ~3 million outpatient visits and ~80,000 admissions per year — volumes that exceed any single Western pediatric hospital.
- What's the typical pathway for an international family?
- (1) Records review by our pediatric coordinator and matched subspecialist; (2) bilingual records translation; (3) M-visa invitation letter for child + accompanying adult(s); (4) hospital booking with parental accommodation; (5) on-arrival workup with bilingual companion present at consent and clinical discussions; (6) bilingual discharge with home-pediatrician handover; (7) 30/90/365-day follow-up. Most pediatric pathways accept the accompanying adult on the same M-visa with explicit family-relationship documentation.
- What about pediatric cancer specifically?
- China is increasingly active in pediatric oncology trials — particularly in pediatric ALL CAR-T (multiple BCMA / CD19 / CD7 trials), pediatric solid tumour clinical research, and bone-marrow / stem-cell transplant. Standard-of-care protocols at top pediatric oncology centres follow COG / SIOP guidelines. Multi-disciplinary review with pediatric oncology, surgery and radiation is standard. We coordinate against trial registries; see our [Clinical Trials in China](/clinical-trials-china) guide.
- Will the language barrier be a problem for my child?
- Most international children we coordinate are matched with bilingual pediatric staff for as much of the journey as possible. Standard practice at top centres: bilingual nursing and child-life specialist on the international wing; bilingual pediatric subspecialist for the procedure or treatment; English-speaking interpreter for the operating surgeon. We strongly recommend at least one bilingual companion is with your child throughout — see our [Companions](/companions) page.
- What about pediatric vaccines and routine well-child care?
- Vaccines available through Class A pediatric hospitals and JCI-accredited international hospitals (United Family network) follow WHO and Chinese MOH schedules. International-brand vaccines (DTaP, IPV, MMR, varicella, hepatitis A/B, HPV, meningococcal, pneumococcal, influenza) are available; some are imported and others are domestic Chinese. Confirm specific brand and lot before each vaccination and obtain a bilingual immunisation record for your home pediatrician.
- What about complex congenital heart surgery?
- Top centres: Fuwai Hospital (Beijing) pediatric cardiac surgery program; Shanghai Children's Medical Center (the leading pediatric cardiac centre in China by volume); Anzhen Hospital pediatric program. Indicative pricing: ASD/VSD device closure $10,000–$18,000; tetralogy of Fallot repair $22,000–$35,000; complex congenital open-heart surgery from $25,000. Cases requiring multiple staged repairs or transplant evaluation are reviewed by MDT before quoting.
