FAQ
Frequently asked questions.
- Do I need an M-visa as a Singapore citizen?
- Yes — for inpatient or surgical care in mainland China, Singapore citizens require an M (medical) visa. Apply via the Chinese embassy in Singapore or via the Chinese Visa Application Service Centre. Hong Kong is visa-free for SG passport holders up to 90 days. We provide the hospital invitation letter and support the application. Standard processing 4–6 business days; same-week express possible.
- Can I use Medisave / MediShield Life for treatment in China?
- Limited. Medisave can be used for approved overseas providers (primarily Malaysia under specific arrangements) — not generally in mainland China. MediShield Life provides cover only for Singapore-based hospitalisation. Integrated Shield Plans (IPs) from AIA, Income, Singlife, GE, HSBC Life and others may include riders covering selected overseas treatment — confirm policy wording in writing before travel. We provide bilingual receipts in SG-acceptable format for any rider claim.
- What about private medical insurance with international cover?
- Bupa Global, Cigna Global, AXA International, Allianz Care, IMG and similar international policies typically reimburse treatment in mainland China and Hong Kong. Domestic-only Singapore policies generally don't. We provide ICD-10 / SNOMED-mapped procedure codes plus translated medical narrative.
- What are the practical advantages from Singapore?
- Two: (1) flight time — Changi to PEK / PVG / CAN is 5–7 hours direct, allowing weekend or short trips for outpatient procedures; (2) language — many Singapore Chinese-Singaporean patients have working Mandarin, easing the in-country experience. Disadvantage: Singapore's own private hospital system is excellent and well-regulated; for many procedures, the cost / quality / convenience tradeoff favours staying in Singapore. Where China clearly wins: complex cardiac (Fuwai volume), specific oncology trials, regenerative medicine access, and very high-cost procedures (e.g. CAR-T, proton).
- Will my Singapore physician accept the records?
- Yes — bilingual MDT reports follow international conventions and Singapore physicians (most fluent in English, many in Chinese) accept them readily. Peer-to-peer between operating Chinese surgeon and Singapore physician offered free for complex cases. For ongoing prescription continuity, the Singapore physician issues a domestic prescription based on the bilingual treatment summary; some NMPA-approved agents differ from MOH-Singapore approved listings.
- What about combined Hong Kong + mainland trips?
- A common pattern from Singapore: initial consultation and second opinion at Hong Kong (visa-free, English-first, USD-friendly billing) followed by treatment at a mainland Class A centre. Hong Kong hospitals (HKSH, Hong Kong Adventist) routinely refer complex cases across the border to Beijing or Shanghai partner centres. We coordinate the cross-border records package and travel logistics.
