Gum Care & Implants at West China
Nine days in Chengdu with both the dental and the diabetes care at Sichuan University hospitals: an endocrinology review at West China Hospital, gum treatment and, if your control allows, implant placement at West China Hospital of Stomatology, a National Center for Stomatology. Pandas, teahouses and quiet temples fill the rest.
Trip length
9 days / 8 nights
Program
Implants with diabetes · two trips
Best time to go
March–June and September–November
Best for
Gum disease plus missing teeth, with type 1 or type 2 diabetes
Overview
Both halves of your care at Sichuan University, with pandas and teahouses.
West China Hospital of Stomatology traces its history to 1907 and is one of China's three National Centers for Stomatology. West China Hospital, its sister hospital at Sichuan University, provides the endocrinology review. Keeping both in one city, and one university, makes it easy to share results between the two teams.
This route suits people who need gum treatment first and implants after: the gums are treated early in the trip, and an implant goes in only if the surgeon is happy with both your gums and your glucose. Otherwise the implant moves to a second trip, alongside the final crown.
This route suits
- Adults with diabetes who have both gum disease and missing teeth
- People who'd like one university to handle the dental and diabetes care
- Families who want to see the pandas
- Travellers who like tea, slow mornings and good food

What the care covers
Endocrinology review
Before any dental treatment, so the dentist knows how well your diabetes is controlled.
- Consultation with an endocrinologist, with an interpreter
- Blood tests such as HbA1c, fasting glucose and kidney function
- Review of your medicines and how to take them around dental appointments
- Written summary for the dentist and for your doctor at home
Dental examination & plan
Nothing is treated until the plan and price are confirmed in writing.
- Examination by a specialist dentist, including gum pocket measurements
- Panoramic X-ray, or a CBCT 3D scan if implants are being considered
- Written treatment plan with materials and itemised price
- Chance to ask questions and say no before treatment starts
Gum (periodontal) treatment
Deep cleaning below the gum line, spread over the trip.
- Scaling and root planing under local anaesthetic, usually in two or more sessions
- Morning appointments, after your usual breakfast and medicines
- Home-care instruction: brushing, cleaning between the teeth
- Plan for a gum re-check about two to three months later, at home or on a return trip
Implant surgery (trip 1)
Booked only once the surgeon is satisfied with your glucose control and gum health.
- Gum disease treated first if the examination finds it
- Implant placement under local anaesthetic; brand named in your quote
- Antibiotics only if the surgeon judges them necessary
- Wound check, glucose check-ins and a review before you fly
Final crown (trip 2)
After the implant has healed, usually three to six months later; sometimes longer.
- Check of the implant and an X-ray
- Digital scan or impression for the crown
- Crown fitted and bite adjusted
- Maintenance plan: cleaning every three to six months at home
Records & handover
So your dentist and your diabetes doctor at home both know what was done.
- Written summary in English of the dental and endocrinology visits
- X-rays, scans and blood test results to take home
- Implant brand, model and size recorded where relevant
- Follow-up video call with your coordinator after you return
The final plan is set by the endocrinologist and dentist after seeing you, not before. Background reading: diabetes care · implants with diabetes · dental tourism guide

Treatment timeline
How many trips you need
| Visit | When | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Before booking | From home | Send a recent HbA1c and X-rays. If your glucose control isn't yet good enough for surgery, we plan a gum-and-diabetes trip first. |
| Trip 1 | This itinerary | Endocrinology review, examination and CBCT, gum treatment if needed, implant placement, check-up before you fly. |
| Healing | Usually 3–6 months, at home | The implant fuses with the bone. Your surgeon sets the timing, and may allow longer healing with diabetes. |
| Trip 2 | 4–6 days | Final crown fitted and bite adjusted. |
Built around diabetes
How this trip protects your treatment

- Pandas early in the trip, when you're at your freshest
- Teahouses and temples, not hikes, in the days after surgery
- Final review on day 8, the day before you fly

Travel
What you’ll see
Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding
Pandas, including cubs in season, in a large wooded park on the city's northern edge.
Tip: Arrive at opening time, when the pandas are feeding and most active.
People's Park teahouse
An open-air teahouse under the trees where locals play mahjong, have their ears cleaned and drink tea for hours.
Tip: Unsweetened green or jasmine tea is a good drink for blood sugar; skip the sweet snacks.
Wenshu Monastery
A working Buddhist monastery with quiet courtyards, a vegetarian restaurant and a teahouse.
Tip: The vegetarian restaurant serves soft tofu dishes, ideal after dental treatment.
Kuanzhai Xiangzi
Restored Qing-dynasty lanes of courtyard houses, now filled with cafés and shops.
Tip: Best in the early evening, after a rest.

Worried about lows or slow healing?
Tell us how you manage your diabetes and what dental work you need. We'll plan morning appointments, meal times and rest days around it.
Aftercare
Travelling with diabetes after dental treatment
Eating after treatment
Soft food, but not only rice. Plain rice congee and noodles raise blood sugar quickly; add egg, tofu, fish or soft vegetables, and keep to your usual meal times so your medicines still match what you eat.
Checking glucose
Check more often in the days after treatment. Pain or infection can push glucose up, while eating less than usual can bring it down. Carry glucose tablets or juice for lows, and follow your own diabetes team's sick-day advice.
Watching the wound
Some swelling and tenderness are normal. Swelling that gets worse after the third day, pus, fever or a bad taste can mean infection, which can move faster with diabetes. Tell your coordinator straight away.
Walking & your feet
Walking after meals helps blood sugar, and these routes are planned around flat, easy walks. Wear comfortable shoes you've already broken in, and check your feet each evening if you have neuropathy.
General guidance only. Your own diabetes team and your dentist give advice for your case, and theirs comes first.
Practical tips
Before you go
- Sichuan food is spicy and often oily. Ask for 不辣 (bù là, not spicy) while you heal, and choose steamed or stir-fried vegetables over deep-fried dishes.
- Tell us about all your medicines, especially blood thinners or osteoporosis drugs, so the surgeon can plan safely.
- Send an HbA1c result from the last three months, plus a panoramic X-ray if you have one. These decide which program fits.
- Bring a list of all your medicines with doses, and tell us in advance about insulin, SGLT2 inhibitors, blood thinners or osteoporosis drugs. Never stop a medicine without your doctor's advice.
- Carry insulin, your meter or sensor and spare supplies in your hand luggage, with a letter from your doctor. Ask your diabetes team how to adjust doses across time zones.
- Bring your passport to every appointment; hospitals use it to register you.
FAQ
Chengdu diabetes dental tour — answered.
- Why treat the gums before the implant?
- Active gum disease is a risk factor for inflammation and bone loss around implants, and diabetes adds to that risk. Getting the gums under control first gives the implant a better start.
- Can I do full-arch implants on this route?
- Sometimes, but it's a bigger decision with diabetes. Send us your X-rays and HbA1c and the surgeon will say whether it's reasonable for you, and how the trips would be split.
- Can I get dental implants if I have diabetes?
- Often, yes. With well-controlled diabetes, implants generally do well. Poorly controlled diabetes is linked to slower healing, more infections and more inflammation around implants later on. There's no single HbA1c cut-off: the surgeon decides for your case, which is why we ask for a recent result before booking and arrange an endocrinology review before surgery.
- Does treating gum disease help my diabetes?
- Modestly. A 2022 Cochrane review found that gum treatment lowered HbA1c by about 0.4 percentage points at three to four months, and about 0.3 at six months, compared with no treatment or usual care. It's worth doing for your teeth and gums anyway, but it doesn't replace diabetes medicines, diet or exercise.
- What if my HbA1c is high?
- Then we won't plan elective surgery yet. Gum treatment, cleaning and an endocrinology review can still go ahead, and they're often the right first step. Implants can follow on a later trip, once your glucose control has improved.
- I have type 1 diabetes. Can I join?
- Yes. The main risk on treatment days is low blood sugar, so appointments are booked in the morning after breakfast, and you should carry fast-acting glucose. Agree with your own diabetes team before you travel how to manage insulin around treatment and across time zones.
- How much does a diabetes dental tour cost?
- It depends on the dental treatment, which only a dentist can confirm after seeing your X-rays, plus the endocrinology tests, the route and hotels. Send us an X-ray, your HbA1c and your dates, and we'll reply with an itemised quote.
- Who looks after me when I get home?
- You leave with written summaries in English from both the dentist and the endocrinologist, plus X-rays and blood results, so your dentist and doctor at home can carry on. Your coordinator stays in touch after the trip.
