Trip length
5 days / 4 nights
Program
Dental + diabetes check-up
Best time to go
March–May and September–November
Best for
A first assessment of teeth, gums and diabetes; travellers already in Shanghai
Overview
A short trip to find out where your teeth and your diabetes stand.
Not everyone knows what they need. This short route gives you a clear picture: an endocrinologist reviews your glucose control and medicines, and a dentist checks your teeth and gums, cleans them and tells you whether gum treatment or implants would make sense.
Hangzhou is about an hour from Shanghai by high-speed train, and West Lake is made for flat, unhurried walking, which is good for blood sugar after meals.
This route suits
- Adults with diabetes who haven't seen a dentist for a while
- People wondering whether implants are realistic for them
- Travellers adding a few days to a Shanghai trip
- Anyone who'd like a dental opinion before committing to a longer trip

Travel
What you’ll see
West Lake & Su Causeway
The lake that has inspired Chinese poets and painters for centuries, crossed by the willow-lined Su Causeway.
Tip: Walk the causeway after lunch, or take a boat to the islands.
Longjing tea village
Terraced tea fields in the hills above the lake, where farmers grow and roast Longjing green tea.
Tip: Unsweetened green tea is a good drink for blood sugar; buy a little to take home.
Lingyin Temple
One of China's best-known Buddhist temples, with Buddhas carved into the cliffs of Feilai Feng beside it.
Tip: Mostly flat, with some steps; go early to avoid the crowds.
Hefang Street
A restored old shopping street with traditional pharmacies, teahouses and snack stalls.
Tip: Many snacks here are sweet; look for savoury dumplings instead.

Aftercare
Travelling with diabetes after dental treatment
Eating after treatment
Soft food, but not only rice. Plain rice congee and noodles raise blood sugar quickly; add egg, tofu, fish or soft vegetables, and keep to your usual meal times so your medicines still match what you eat.
Checking glucose
Check more often in the days after treatment. Pain or infection can push glucose up, while eating less than usual can bring it down. Carry glucose tablets or juice for lows, and follow your own diabetes team's sick-day advice.
Watching the wound
Some swelling and tenderness are normal. Swelling that gets worse after the third day, pus, fever or a bad taste can mean infection, which can move faster with diabetes. Tell your coordinator straight away.
Walking & your feet
Walking after meals helps blood sugar, and these routes are planned around flat, easy walks. Wear comfortable shoes you've already broken in, and check your feet each evening if you have neuropathy.
General guidance only. Your own diabetes team and your dentist give advice for your case, and theirs comes first.
Practical tips
Before you go
- Spring weekends around West Lake are very busy; weekdays are calmer.
- If you'll want gum treatment or implants afterwards, the Shanghai, Beijing and Chengdu routes pick up where this one leaves off.
- Send an HbA1c result from the last three months, plus a panoramic X-ray if you have one. These decide which program fits.
- Bring a list of all your medicines with doses, and tell us in advance about insulin, SGLT2 inhibitors, blood thinners or osteoporosis drugs. Never stop a medicine without your doctor's advice.
- Carry insulin, your meter or sensor and spare supplies in your hand luggage, with a letter from your doctor. Ask your diabetes team how to adjust doses across time zones.
- Bring your passport to every appointment; hospitals use it to register you.
FAQ
Hangzhou diabetes dental tour — answered.
- Can I have gum treatment on this trip?
- A cleaning and simple treatment, yes. Full deep cleaning of the gums usually needs two or more sessions on separate days, so it fits better on the Shanghai or Chengdu routes, or on an extended stay here. Ask your coordinator.
- Will I find out whether implants suit me?
- You'll get the dentist's view after the examination, and the endocrinologist's view on your glucose control. If an implant looks reasonable, a CBCT scan can be added so the plan is ready for a later trip.
- Can I get dental implants if I have diabetes?
- Often, yes. With well-controlled diabetes, implants generally do well. Poorly controlled diabetes is linked to slower healing, more infections and more inflammation around implants later on. There's no single HbA1c cut-off: the surgeon decides for your case, which is why we ask for a recent result before booking and arrange an endocrinology review before surgery.
- Does treating gum disease help my diabetes?
- Modestly. A 2022 Cochrane review found that gum treatment lowered HbA1c by about 0.4 percentage points at three to four months, and about 0.3 at six months, compared with no treatment or usual care. It's worth doing for your teeth and gums anyway, but it doesn't replace diabetes medicines, diet or exercise.
- What if my HbA1c is high?
- Then we won't plan elective surgery yet. Gum treatment, cleaning and an endocrinology review can still go ahead, and they're often the right first step. Implants can follow on a later trip, once your glucose control has improved.
- I have type 1 diabetes. Can I join?
- Yes. The main risk on treatment days is low blood sugar, so appointments are booked in the morning after breakfast, and you should carry fast-acting glucose. Agree with your own diabetes team before you travel how to manage insulin around treatment and across time zones.
- How much does a diabetes dental tour cost?
- It depends on the dental treatment, which only a dentist can confirm after seeing your X-rays, plus the endocrinology tests, the route and hotels. Send us an X-ray, your HbA1c and your dates, and we'll reply with an itemised quote.
- Who looks after me when I get home?
- You leave with written summaries in English from both the dentist and the endocrinologist, plus X-rays and blood results, so your dentist and doctor at home can carry on. Your coordinator stays in touch after the trip.
