Implants with Diabetes
Trip one of a two-trip implant plan for people with well-controlled diabetes: an endocrinology review at Peking Union Medical College Hospital, then examination and implant placement at Peking University's dental hospital, whose international division treats patients in English, with gentle days at the Summer Palace, the Temple of Heaven and the Great Wall.
Trip length
8 days / 7 nights
Program
Implants with diabetes · two trips
Best time to go
April–May and September–October
Best for
One to three missing teeth with well-controlled type 1 or type 2 diabetes
Overview
Implants planned around your diabetes, at a national dental centre.
Diabetes doesn't rule out implants, but it changes how they are planned. Poorly controlled blood sugar slows healing and raises the risk of infection and of inflammation around the implant later on. So this trip starts with an endocrinology review, and the implant surgeon sees your results before deciding on surgery.
Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology is one of China's three National Centers for Stomatology; its International Clinical Division provides diagnosis and treatment in English. Surgery comes early in the week, leaving time for check-ups and slow sightseeing before you fly.
This route suits
- Adults with diabetes who are missing one or a few teeth
- People told at home that diabetes makes them a complicated implant case
- Patients who want treatment delivered in English
- First-time visitors who want China's classic sights

What the care covers
Endocrinology review
Before any dental treatment, so the dentist knows how well your diabetes is controlled.
- Consultation with an endocrinologist, with an interpreter
- Blood tests such as HbA1c, fasting glucose and kidney function
- Review of your medicines and how to take them around dental appointments
- Written summary for the dentist and for your doctor at home
Dental examination & plan
Nothing is treated until the plan and price are confirmed in writing.
- Examination by a specialist dentist, including gum pocket measurements
- Panoramic X-ray, or a CBCT 3D scan if implants are being considered
- Written treatment plan with materials and itemised price
- Chance to ask questions and say no before treatment starts
Implant surgery (trip 1)
Booked only once the surgeon is satisfied with your glucose control and gum health.
- Gum disease treated first if the examination finds it
- Implant placement under local anaesthetic; brand named in your quote
- Antibiotics only if the surgeon judges them necessary
- Wound check, glucose check-ins and a review before you fly
Final crown (trip 2)
After the implant has healed, usually three to six months later; sometimes longer.
- Check of the implant and an X-ray
- Digital scan or impression for the crown
- Crown fitted and bite adjusted
- Maintenance plan: cleaning every three to six months at home
Records & handover
So your dentist and your diabetes doctor at home both know what was done.
- Written summary in English of the dental and endocrinology visits
- X-rays, scans and blood test results to take home
- Implant brand, model and size recorded where relevant
- Follow-up video call with your coordinator after you return

Treatment timeline
How many trips you need
| Visit | When | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Before booking | From home | Send a recent HbA1c and X-rays. If your glucose control isn't yet good enough for surgery, we plan a gum-and-diabetes trip first. |
| Trip 1 | This itinerary | Endocrinology review, examination and CBCT, gum treatment if needed, implant placement, check-up before you fly. |
| Healing | Usually 3–6 months, at home | The implant fuses with the bone. Your surgeon sets the timing, and may allow longer healing with diabetes. |
| Trip 2 | 4–6 days | Final crown fitted and bite adjusted. |

Travel
What you’ll see
Summer Palace
The Qing imperial garden around Kunming Lake, with the Long Corridor, the Seventeen-Arch Bridge and lakeside pavilions.
Tip: Take a boat across the lake to save walking on a recovery day.
Temple of Heaven
The Ming-dynasty complex where emperors prayed for good harvests, set in a large park full of morning tai chi and card players.
Tip: Go early; the paths are flat and shaded.
Hutongs around Houhai
Old lanes of courtyard houses around the Houhai and Shichahai lakes.
Tip: A rickshaw tour is an easy option for the day after surgery.
Mutianyu Great Wall
A restored, less crowded section of the Wall about 1.5–2 hours from the city, with a cable car up and down.
Tip: Use the cable car both ways, carry snacks and glucose tablets, and check your glucose more often on active days.

Aftercare
Travelling with diabetes after dental treatment
Eating after treatment
Soft food, but not only rice. Plain rice congee and noodles raise blood sugar quickly; add egg, tofu, fish or soft vegetables, and keep to your usual meal times so your medicines still match what you eat.
Checking glucose
Check more often in the days after treatment. Pain or infection can push glucose up, while eating less than usual can bring it down. Carry glucose tablets or juice for lows, and follow your own diabetes team's sick-day advice.
Watching the wound
Some swelling and tenderness are normal. Swelling that gets worse after the third day, pus, fever or a bad taste can mean infection, which can move faster with diabetes. Tell your coordinator straight away.
Walking & your feet
Walking after meals helps blood sugar, and these routes are planned around flat, easy walks. Wear comfortable shoes you've already broken in, and check your feet each evening if you have neuropathy.
General guidance only. Your own diabetes team and your dentist give advice for your case, and theirs comes first.
Practical tips
Before you go
- Send your latest HbA1c before booking. If it's too high for elective surgery, we'll suggest a gum-and-diabetes trip first and implants later.
- Beijing is very hot in July–August and cold and dry in winter; spring and autumn are best for walking.
- Send an HbA1c result from the last three months, plus a panoramic X-ray if you have one. These decide which program fits.
- Bring a list of all your medicines with doses, and tell us in advance about insulin, SGLT2 inhibitors, blood thinners or osteoporosis drugs. Never stop a medicine without your doctor's advice.
- Carry insulin, your meter or sensor and spare supplies in your hand luggage, with a letter from your doctor. Ask your diabetes team how to adjust doses across time zones.
- Bring your passport to every appointment; hospitals use it to register you.
FAQ
Beijing diabetes dental tour — answered.
- What if the surgeon says my glucose isn't good enough on the day?
- Then surgery doesn't go ahead on this trip. You still have the examination, the endocrinology review and any gum treatment, and the implant is planned for a later trip once your control improves. We'd rather move a surgery than risk a failed implant.
- Is the treatment really in English?
- At Peking University's International Clinical Division, yes; the hospital states it provides full diagnosis and treatment in English. At the endocrinology appointment your coordinator interprets.
- Can I get dental implants if I have diabetes?
- Often, yes. With well-controlled diabetes, implants generally do well. Poorly controlled diabetes is linked to slower healing, more infections and more inflammation around implants later on. There's no single HbA1c cut-off: the surgeon decides for your case, which is why we ask for a recent result before booking and arrange an endocrinology review before surgery.
- Does treating gum disease help my diabetes?
- Modestly. A 2022 Cochrane review found that gum treatment lowered HbA1c by about 0.4 percentage points at three to four months, and about 0.3 at six months, compared with no treatment or usual care. It's worth doing for your teeth and gums anyway, but it doesn't replace diabetes medicines, diet or exercise.
- What if my HbA1c is high?
- Then we won't plan elective surgery yet. Gum treatment, cleaning and an endocrinology review can still go ahead, and they're often the right first step. Implants can follow on a later trip, once your glucose control has improved.
- I have type 1 diabetes. Can I join?
- Yes. The main risk on treatment days is low blood sugar, so appointments are booked in the morning after breakfast, and you should carry fast-acting glucose. Agree with your own diabetes team before you travel how to manage insulin around treatment and across time zones.
- How much does a diabetes dental tour cost?
- It depends on the dental treatment, which only a dentist can confirm after seeing your X-rays, plus the endocrinology tests, the route and hotels. Send us an X-ray, your HbA1c and your dates, and we'll reply with an itemised quote.
- Who looks after me when I get home?
- You leave with written summaries in English from both the dentist and the endocrinologist, plus X-rays and blood results, so your dentist and doctor at home can carry on. Your coordinator stays in touch after the trip.
