Days with burning behind the breastbone (heartburn)?
Educational tool — not a diagnosis. GerdQ, Jones et al. 2009. Validated in primary care to identify GERD likelihood and inform empiric PPI therapy decisions.
Frequently asked
Plain-language answers about gerd, this screener, and what evaluation costs at a Class A hospital in China.
- What's a GerdQ score that suggests GERD?
- ≥8 has reasonable sensitivity and specificity for GERD. ≥9 is highly likely GERD. The score also helps distinguish GERD from functional dyspepsia, which has overlapping symptoms but very different treatment.
- When do I need an endoscopy?
- Alarm symptoms (dysphagia, weight loss, anaemia, GI bleeding, age >55 with new symptoms) warrant endoscopy. GerdQ-positive without alarm symptoms typically gets empiric PPI trial first.
- What does endoscopy cost in China?
- Upper endoscopy with biopsy at a Class A international department typically costs $260–420 — vs $1,800–4,500 in the US. Same-day results, sedation included.
