FAQ

Choosing a TCM hospital.

What is the best TCM hospital in China?
There is no single 'best' — selection depends on specialty. Guang'anmen Hospital (Beijing) is widely regarded as the top integrative oncology centre. Longhua Hospital (Shanghai) leads in arthritis and rheumatology. Dongzhimen Hospital (Beijing) is the flagship of Beijing UCM with strong cardiology. Xiyuan Hospital is the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences's flagship. Chengdu University of TCM Affiliated Hospital is the leading regional TCM centre.
Do TCM hospitals accept foreigners?
Yes — all top Class A TCM hospitals operate International Patient Departments (IPD) with English-speaking coordinators. Most also support Japanese, Korean and Russian. Walk-in registration is possible but advance appointment via Panda Touring Care or the hospital's IPD significantly reduces waiting time and ensures interpreter availability.
How do I book an appointment at a TCM hospital?
Three options: (1) book directly through the hospital's International Patient Department (typically 5–10 day lead time); (2) book via Panda Touring Care for coordinated multi-hospital scheduling, interpreter coverage and visa support; (3) walk in same-day registration (挂号) for general clinics — note senior specialist (主任医师) appointments may require advance booking weeks ahead.
What's the difference between TCM hospitals and general hospitals?
TCM hospitals are dedicated Class A facilities staffed predominantly by 5-year-trained TCM physicians and offering full TCM modalities plus modern Western diagnostic infrastructure (CT, MRI, lab). Class A general hospitals (e.g. PUMC, Ruijin) typically operate dedicated 'integrative medicine' wards staffed by physicians dual-trained in Western and TCM medicine.
How much do TCM hospital consultations cost?
General TCM clinic consultation: $30–80; senior physician (主治医师): $60–150; chief physician (主任医师): $150–400 depending on hospital and reputation. Diagnostic add-ons (Western lab, ECG, ultrasound) are billed separately at standard hospital rates. Panda Touring Care international packages including coordinator and interpreter typically add $200–400 to a consultation visit.
