- Why China for cardiac surgery?
- Three reasons: (1) Fuwai Hospital is the National Center for Cardiovascular Diseases — China’s designated national cardiac reference centre, performing over 15,000 cardiac operations per year, the highest single-centre volume in the world for several procedures including isolated CABG and several congenital programmes; (2) China has full multi-platform TAVI access including Edwards Sapien 3 and three domestic NMPA-approved valves (Venus-A, VitaFlow, TaurusOne); (3) all-in package pricing of $8,500–22,000 for CABG or surgical valve, vs $80,000–180,000 US list — reflecting volume, lower input costs and bundled care.
- What does ‘all-in’ include?
- All-in international-patient package typically includes: pre-operative workup (echocardiogram, coronary angiography, cardiac CT or MRI as indicated), surgeon and anaesthesia fees, operating-room time, ICU stay, ward stay through discharge, implants (mechanical or bioprosthetic valve, stent, pacemaker as applicable), nursing, pharmacy through discharge, post-op echocardiogram, bilingual final report, and 30 / 60 / 90-day remote follow-up. Excluded: travel, accommodation outside the hospital, complications requiring re-intervention.
- Is the surgeon experience comparable to US / EU centres?
- At top centres, yes — and often higher in raw volume. Fuwai senior surgeons typically perform 300–500+ cases per year individually. Outcomes (30-day mortality, stroke rate, sternal wound infection, re-operation rate) at Fuwai are published in major journals (JACC, JTCVS, Annals of Thoracic Surgery) and are within the range of US STS-database benchmarks for matched case mix. Centre selection matters — we route to the senior surgical team most appropriate for your case.
- What about complex / re-do cardiac surgery?
- Fuwai, Anzhen and Zhongshan all run dedicated programs for re-do CABG, multi-valve, complex aortic root, and adult congenital. Sufficient case complexity is the reason these centres maintain volume — re-do and complex cases are routine. We escalate complex cases to the senior surgeon and request a written surgical plan before quoting.
- How does TAVI in China compare?
- Multi-platform: imported (Edwards Sapien 3, Medtronic Evolut Pro+) and three NMPA-approved domestic valves (Venus-A self-expanding, VitaFlow self-expanding, TaurusOne balloon-expandable). Domestic platforms are 30–50% cheaper than imported. All-in TAVI package $35,000–55,000 vs $130,000–180,000 US. CT-based annular sizing, MDT (Heart Team) review, and post-procedure echocardiography are standard at Class A centres.
