The 8th Edition Standards: What Changed in 2025
JCI released its 8th Edition Accreditation Standards in July 2024, effective January 1, 2025 for all hospitals seeking or renewing accreditation. The updated standards place greater emphasis on:

- Infection prevention and antimicrobial stewardship
- Digital health and data governance

JCI vs. China's Own Grade-A (Class A) Tertiary Designation
Many international patients ask about the relationship between JCI accreditation and China's domestic hospital grading system. They are separate, complementary systems:
- Grade-A Tertiary (三甲): China's highest domestic hospital designation. As of end of 2023, there are 1,795 Grade-A tertiary hospitals in China (NHC Statistical Bulletin 2023). The grading assesses infrastructure, staffing ratios, equipment, and quality indicators.
- JCI Accreditation: International certification benchmarked against global standards. Covers 46 hospitals in China. Particularly focused on patient safety systems, communication protocols, and quality measurement processes aligned with international practice.
