FAQ

PET-CT, in plain language.

What is PET-CT and why do people get one?
PET-CT is a hybrid imaging modality combining positron emission tomography (PET) with CT. The patient receives an injection of FDG (fluorodeoxyglucose) — a radioactively-labelled glucose analogue. Tissues with high glucose metabolism (most cancers, also inflammation and brain) take up FDG and 'light up' on the scan. Used for: cancer screening (high-risk patients), oncology staging, response assessment, recurrence detection, and unexplained inflammation workup.
How much does PET-CT cost in China?
Standalone full-body FDG PET-CT: $1,200–$2,500 at top centres. Comparable scan in the US: $5,000–$10,000. UK private: £1,500–£3,500. Pricing in China is driven by high scanner density (400+ installed) and competitive market rather than reimbursement structures. Includes radiologist report and oncology consultation in most international packages.
Is PET-CT a good cancer screening test for healthy people?
Mixed evidence — and important caveats. PET-CT is established for staging known cancers and detecting recurrence. As a primary screening test in asymptomatic average-risk people, it is not recommended due to radiation exposure (~14 mSv) and false-positive rate. It can be reasonable for high-risk patients (strong family history, prior cancer, occupational exposure) or as one part of a comprehensive longevity screening package — discuss honestly with your oncologist.
What's the radiation exposure?
Total effective dose: ~10–14 mSv (about 4 years of natural background radiation, or ~3× a chest CT). Modern digital PET-CT systems reduce dose by 30–50%. For staging or recurrence detection, the benefit clearly outweighs the risk. For repeated screening in asymptomatic people, the radiation should be weighed against the modest expected yield.
Where can I get PET-CT in China?
Top centres for international patients: Shanghai Cancer Center (Fudan), PUMC International, Ruijin Hospital, Zhongshan Hospital, Beijing Cancer Hospital. Several centres operate the latest digital PET-CT (Siemens Biograph Vision, GE Discovery MI) and PET-MRI (Siemens Biograph mMR) systems. Same-day or next-day appointments are typical for international patients.
What about PET-MRI?
PET-MRI combines PET with MRI rather than CT — substantially lower radiation dose (only the PET tracer, no CT) and superior soft-tissue contrast. Especially valuable for paediatric, brain, head & neck, prostate and gynaecologic indications. Cost runs $1,800–$3,500 in China vs $4,000–$8,000 in the US. Available at Ruijin, Zhongshan, PUMC and select Cancer Hospital sites.
